Mayors in Richelieu, Carignan, and Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu have raised concerns regarding agricultural land protection, insufficient provincial funding for public transit, and a severe housing crisis driven by low vacancy rates and projected population growth. In Chambly specifically, political tensions have escalated within the municipal government. Seven councillors issued a joint statement criticizing Mayor Alexandra Labbé, alleging a “significant lack of collaboration and communication” and a “functional breakdown of the municipal team.” The councillors cited difficulties regarding a real estate project and a lack of clear direction, noting that while they empathize with the mayor’s recent health challenges, the current administrative situation has become “untenable.” ## Timeline ### 2026-10-06: Chambly councillors criticize Mayor Alexandra Labbé Seven Chambly municipal councillors have issued a statement criticizing Mayor Alexandra Labbé for a lack of collaboration and communication, calling the current administrative situation untenable. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/chambly-councillors-criticize-mayor-alexandra-labb ### 2026-09-23: Chambly region mayors highlight housing and transit challenges Mayors in Quebec's Chambly region are addressing critical local issues, including housing shortages in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, public transit funding in Carignan, and agricultural land use in Richelieu. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/chambly-region-mayors-highlight-housing-and-transit-challenges --- Cite as: Chambly region municipal governance and regional challenges.
