Reports of illegal hunting and poaching of protected chamois have emerged in the Balkan region. In North Macedonia, the organization ‘Eco Awareness’ raised alarms after video footage surfaced showing foreign hunters killing wild chamois in Mavrovo National Park. The footage reportedly showed hunters using optical sights and drinking blood from a thermos. Observers noted a vehicle with Mavrovo National Park insignia was present, leading environmentalists to demand a moratorium on conflicting activities and the urgent completion of the park’s legal reclassification.

In Greece, a separate incident occurred in Evrytania where poachers shot and killed a protected herd of chamois on a public road. A witness reported that the gunfire took place just meters in front of a moving vehicle, narrowly avoiding a collision or a plunge into a ravine. The perpetrators fled the scene upon being noticed, and a formal complaint was filed with local police.
