In extreme heat, such as car interiors reaching 60 to 70 °C, water quality can degrade chemically through substance migration or organoleptically through changes in taste and smell. Consumers are advised to discard water exhibiting an unusual plastic taste, abnormal odor, or a visibly deformed bottle.

Additionally, risks have been identified regarding water filtration pitchers. Anses warns that saturated activated carbon cartridges can cause ‘reverse pollution,’ where a used filter releases previously trapped toxins back into the liquid. Improper maintenance of these devices can also lead to bacterial biofilms, signaled by a chlorine or earthy taste, a moldy odor, or the presence of black spots and slippery films on the equipment.
