Through the LIFE ToxFree project, consumer organizations in Central Europe—including Slovenia, Austria, Hungary, and Czechia—have identified significant chemical exposure in various consumer goods. Initial testing revealed bisphenols in approximately one-third of underwear samples and 60 percent of children’s UV-protection T-shirts. Additionally, bisphenols and phthalates were detected in all 81 tested pairs of headphones, with many also containing flame retardants. Experts noted that these substances can act as hormone disruptors, posing risks during developmental stages.

Subsequent focused testing by the Slovenian Consumers’ Association on sports T-shirts found that bisphenols, specifically BPA, BPF, and BPS, were present in several samples. The levels of these chemicals significantly exceeded the upper limits recommended by the European Commission’s Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety. The research indicated that the presence of these substances did not correlate with a product’s price, brand reputation, or use of recycled materials.
