Court-authorized excavations at the Chemmani mass grave site in Jaffna, Sri Lanka, have uncovered a significant number of human remains believed to be linked to the country’s civil war. 

Initial reports indicated that 544 sets of remains had been identified, including the remains of five children. Investigators recovered personal artifacts such as a child’s milk bottle, a school bag, and a numbered amulet, which may assist in matching the remains to individuals reported missing during the conflict. At that stage, officials suggested the burial site might be larger than the current investigation area.

As the 108-day excavation process progressed into its third phase, the total number of identified skeletons rose to 582. Recent findings included 10 additional sets of remains, with investigators noting the presence of babies and children among the victims. Recovered items such as toys, shoes, and bangles continue to support the identification of child victims. One skeleton was reportedly discovered with both hands tied against the chest. The site has been a subject of contention regarding enforced disappearances since 1998.
