Academic and literary critic Chidi Amuta recently launched his memoir, ‘HOMAGE: Return to Familiar Places’, at an event in Lagos attended by figures such as former Head of State Ibrahim Babangida and Abia State Governor Alex Otti. Babangida described Amuta as a ‘national asset’ whose work has shaped public discourse.

Following the launch, Amuta offered a critique of the memoir genre in Nigeria. He noted a high volume of political memoirs that often function as ‘campaign rehearsals, catalogues of blame, or attempts to secure future electoral opportunities’ rather than genuine reflections. He argued that many such works lack the elegant storytelling and linguistic quality necessary to enrich public discourse or capture the essence of human experience.
