Following consecutive losses to Canada and the United States during a North American tour, controversy arose regarding midfielder Marcelino Núñez’s departure from the Chilean national team. National team coach Nicolás Córdova initially addressed the situation by stating that Núñez made a “personal decision” to leave the squad. ANFP president Pablo Milad later provided further context, noting that Núñez left to rejoin his club, Ipswich Town, in England. While Milad characterized the exit as a “personal decision,” he admitted it seemed “strange” and suggested that Núñez owed an explanation primarily to Córdova. Beyond the player's departure, the incident prompted discussions regarding the broader state of Chilean football. Milad and former player Jorge Aravena criticized the lack of squad renewal, suggesting that the influence of the “Generación Dorada” and insufficient structural development have hindered the progression of new talent. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-14: Pablo Milad addresses Marcelino Núñez departure and Chilean football renewal ANFP president Pablo Milad addressed Marcelino Núñez’s abrupt departure from the Chilean national team and joined critiques regarding the lack of talent renewal in the squad. 5 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/pablo-milad-addresses-marcelino-nez-departure-and-chilean-football-renewal ### 2026-10-06: Nicolás Córdova addresses Marcelino Núñez's departure from Chile Chile coach Nicolás Córdova addressed Marcelino Núñez's controversial departure from the national team, citing personal reasons despite rumors of internal friction. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/nicols-crdova-addresses-marcelino-nezs-departure-from-chile --- Cite as: Chile national football team squad controversy.
