# Chilean child abduction and irregular adoption networks

Investigations by judicial and human rights entities in Chile have uncovered large-scale networks involved in child abductions and irregular adoptions. These illicit activities reportedly originated during the Augusto Pinochet dictatorship and persisted into the democratic era. 

Official records indicate that more than 23,400 children were sent abroad, though investigators believe the true figure may be higher. The networks targeted vulnerable women, such as single mothers and members of indigenous communities, often through deception regarding the survival of their infants. These children were transferred to families in various countries, including the United States, Italy, Sweden, Australia, and Denmark, with adoption fees reportedly reaching up to $50,000.

In response, the Chilean organization Fundación Hijos y Madres del Silencio has partnered with the Argentine group Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo to assist in searching for the appropriated children. To date, Chilean courts have processed over 1,300 cases related to these disappearances, and legal proceedings have included requests for the extradition of former officials involved in the networks.
