Chilean authorities have addressed various regulatory and infrastructural aspects of the country’s electric vehicle market.

In late September 2026, the National Consumer Service (SERNAC), in coordination with several ministries and the Superintendency of Electricity and Fuels (SEC), issued a warning regarding compatibility issues. While most of the market uses Type 2 connectors, vehicles utilizing the GB/T standard—representing less than 5.6% of the market—lack compatible public fast-charging infrastructure, which restricts owners to domestic charging.

Concurrently, Chile has implemented a new regulation for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles involving green license plates. Featuring black alphanumeric characters on a green background, these plates serve as a visual identifier for emergency responders, such as Bomberos de Chile, to manage risks like high-voltage systems and battery overheating. The new plates are mandatory for all new electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, while existing owners may switch voluntarily.
