The Chilean Supreme Court has concluded a significant portion of its extraordinary review regarding 58 removal proceedings against judicial officials accused of traveling abroad while on medical leave.

In a recent decision, the Court removed 11 judges from their positions, citing violations of probity standards. Applying Article 80 of the Constitution, the Court’s deliberations resulted in a split outcome: 15 judges were removed by majority vote, while seven cases failed to reach the necessary 11-vote quorum and four resulted in a tie. These removals specifically affected first-instance judges; no ministers from the courts of appeals were removed in this round.

Supreme Court President Gloria Ana Chevesich stated that the Court applied the “principle of proportionality” in its decisions. The sanctioned judges are currently suspended from their duties pending final notification. As the legal fallout continues, approximately 20 judges have appealed their removal cases to the Constitutional Court.
