Led by Prosecutor Marcos Pastén, the investigation resulted in the arrest of Álex Antonio Vega Torres, a former leader of the National Association of Penitentiary Officials (Anfup), and his spouse. The operation involved raids on 14 properties across the Metropolitan, Maule, Bío Bío, and Magallanes regions, as well as inspections of lockers at several detention centers and penitentiary complexes. The investigation targets a structure allegedly facilitating the illegal entry of drugs, mobile phones, and other prohibited items in exchange for payments. Authorities are specifically investigating bank movements totaling approximately $248 million and a separate matter regarding the death of an inmate in 2018. This follows a previous phase in December that led to the formalization of over 40 prison guards. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-30: Chilean authorities arrest former prison official leader in corruption probe Chilean authorities arrested former prison official leader Álex Vega Torres and his spouse in a major corruption probe targeting illegal contraband trafficking within the national penitentiary system. 6 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/chilean-authorities-arrest-former-prison-official-leader-in-corruption-probe ### 2026-09-30: Prison officials face sentencing for corruption in Chile and custodial death in Mexico Legal actions have been taken against a former Chilean prison official for smuggling drugs and electronics, and four Mexican guards have been arrested following video evidence of an inmate's torture and death. 6 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/prison-officials-face-sentencing-for-corruption-in-chile-and-custodial-death-in-mexico --- Cite as: Chilean prison system corruption investigation.
