Chile continues to expand its dual approach to the penitentiary system, balancing heightened security with diverse social reintegration programs.

Under President José Antonio Kast, the government launched ‘Operation Cancerbero,’ transferring at least 300 high-risk inmates to the ‘La Laguna’ penitentiary complex in Talca. This facility utilizes advanced technology, including surveillance cameras and signal blockers, to combat organized crime. Security units have also conducted raids at the Biobío Penitentiary Complex to seize contraband.

Parallel to security efforts, correctional facilities have implemented various educational and cultural initiatives. While previous programs focused on folklore, music, and sustainable fashion, recent efforts have expanded into scientific and academic outreach. 

In Valparaíso, the University of Valparaíso’s School of Law and the Institute of Physics and Astronomy organized a session for youth at the Valparaíso Penitentiary Complex, combining literature and astronomy through readings from Francesco Palla’s book, ‘The Universe of The Little Prince.’ 

Additionally, the Quillota Preventive Detention Center hosted a ‘Science Week’ in collaboration with Gendarmería de Chile. This program, supported by the Colegio Profesor Manuel Guerrero Ceballos and the Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María, featured a mobile planetarium, lectures on neutron stars and the solar system, and solar observations via specialized telescopes. Officials view these scientific and educational activities as essential tools for fostering personal growth and prisoner reintegration.
