A joint communiqué issued by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Djiboutian Foreign Minister Abdoulkader Houssein Omar explicitly opposes the recognition of Somaliland as an independent entity, reaffirming that the territory is part of the Federal Republic of Somalia. This position was rejected by the Somaliland Intellectual Organisation, which argues the statement disregards Somaliland’s distinct history and 1991 declaration of independence. The two nations have also committed to expanded security cooperation under China’s Global Security Initiative. Key priorities include maintaining freedom of navigation in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb strait, protecting maritime trade routes, and preventing Middle Eastern conflicts from destabilizing the Horn of Africa. Beyond maritime security, the partnership aims to increase cooperation in trade, infrastructure, counter-terrorism, and environmental sustainability. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-25: China and Djibouti pledge cooperation on maritime security and regional stability China and Djibouti have pledged to enhance bilateral ties, focusing on maritime security in the Red Sea and preventing the spread of Middle Eastern conflicts into the Horn of Africa. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/china-and-djibouti-pledge-cooperation-on-maritime-security-and-regional-stability ### 2026-10-22: China and Djibouti issue joint statement opposing Somaliland recognition China and Djibouti issued a joint statement reaffirming Somalia's sovereignty over Somaliland, prompting a rejection from Somaliland intellectuals who cite the territory's distinct history. 8 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/china-and-djibouti-issue-joint-statement-opposing-somaliland-recognition --- Cite as: China-Djibouti diplomatic and security cooperation.
