China is advancing several large-scale energy storage technologies to support renewable energy integration and grid stability.

In Shandong province, construction has commenced on the Ruitan demonstration project in Yantai. This facility aims to be the first utility-scale plant to combine supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) power generation with a 100-megawatt molten salt thermal energy storage system. The water-free, closed-loop technology is designed to adjust loads significantly faster than traditional coal units and is expected to be operational by 2027.

Further developments include the successful grid connection of a 100 MW/1,000 MWh compressed CO2 energy storage plant by China Huadian in Xinjiang. This long-duration facility is intended to provide 10 hours of storage. Additionally, a pilot project in Hebei province is testing a dual-technology approach by combining lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries to optimize costs and system complexity.
