Researchers in China have achieved significant advancements in high-speed data transmission technologies. In Nanjing, a team demonstrated wireless data speeds of 206 gigabits per second using a thumbnail-sized chip, aiming to overcome the physical limitations of current 5G high-frequency waves.

Following this, a collaborative effort involving the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, Peng Cheng Laboratory, and FiberHome Tengcang Fiber Technology Co., Ltd. set a world record for real-time bidirectional optical fiber transmission. This breakthrough reached 3.2 petabits per second using 24-core multi-core optical fiber and multiplexing techniques. This technology is intended to support 6G networks, large-scale computing hubs, and increasing data center demands.

Expanding on these achievements, a research alliance including the National Key Laboratory of Optical Technology and Optical Communication Networks, Pengcheng Laboratory, and Fiberhome Fujikura established a new record of 3.2 petabits per second over a 24-core cable spanning 10.3 km. This milestone surpasses a previous record of 2.5 petabits per second set by the same group earlier in 2026. The team utilized Spatial Division Multiplexing combined with S+C+L multi-band transmission technology to address signal crosstalk and interference between adjacent cores. This capacity could theoretically support 1 Gbps broadband connections for approximately 3.2 million households simultaneously and is considered vital for the growth of the artificial intelligence industry and 6G wireless backbone networks.

Furthering these developments, China Telecom, Yangtze Optical Fibre and Cable Joint Stock Limited Company, and ZTE Corporation completed the world’s first real-time bidirectional transmission verification using hollow-core optical fiber over a distance of 1,007.48 kilometers. This test achieved a total capacity of 128Tb/s using an extended C+L band, demonstrating the potential for high-bandwidth, low-latency backbone networks by overcoming hurdles such as gas absorption and signal degradation.
