# Chocó earthquake reconstruction and urban reform efforts

Following an earthquake emergency in the Chocó region, academic and social leaders in Colombia are organizing efforts to facilitate regional reconstruction and urban policy reform.

In Medellín, an academic forum hosted by Universidad EAFIT aims to bring together experts to discuss housing solutions, risk management, and financial mechanisms. Discussions include exploring models such as a ‘Marshall Plan’ for Chocó to address development needs through 2030.

Parallel to these academic efforts, the II National Popular Summit in Bogotá is convening over 1,500 participants to debate integral urban reform. This summit focuses on addressing housing deficits, gentrification, and the humanitarian consequences of the recent earthquakes on urban communities.

Building on these initiatives, the RE Quibdó & Chocó 2026 academic encounter at Universidad EAFIT has brought together urban planners, engineers, and local officials to address the ‘Challenges for urban planning and the reconstruction of Quibdó and Chocó.’ The panel focuses on lessons learned from recent seismic activity and the necessity of strategic territorial ordering. 

Discussions are addressing the practicalities of rebuilding collapsed housing through either on-site reconstruction or relocation. To support these efforts, the Mayor of Quibdó has designated 24 hectares for potential relocation. The encounter includes technical support from Medellín-based university professors and students who assisted during the initial emergency, alongside representatives from the Chocó regional government and municipalities including Condoto, Tadó, and Atrato.
