The documentary ‘Pretenders’, directed by Joss Crowley, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film chronicles the emergence and evolution of the rock band led by Chrissie Hynde, utilizing archival material and commentary from musicians including Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello, and Johnny Marr.

Hynde expressed reluctance toward the project, noting she did not enjoy the three-year interview process. She stated, “I haven't watched it, and I won't watch it,” explaining a lack of interest in hearing her own story told. Hynde indicated her primary motivation for participating was to highlight the influence of the band’s early guitarist, James Honeyman-Scott.

As the first authorized documentary about the band, the production followed years of persuasion by Crowley. Hynde, 75, established strict ground rules to maintain boundaries, including limiting her own on-camera interviews to avoid self-mythologizing. She requested a focus on the band rather than a traditional biographical approach, noting a preference for controlling the narrative of the band's history herself.
