The Chudo Kaikaku Rengo (Centrist Reform Union) is undergoing a strategic split following its failure to secure a major merger and a significant defeat in the February 2026 general election, where the alliance won only 49 seats. 

On September 8, 2026, the alliance officially decided to dissolve through a planned separation. To manage approximately 1.16 billion yen in outstanding election-related debts and receive remaining political subsidies, the group will maintain a minimal legal existence. A single Diet member will remain with the party to facilitate these financial settlements.

By September 11, 2026, Representative Junya Ogawa announced that a new political party is expected to be established as early as the following week. This new entity will consist of 28 members departing from the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan. Ogawa noted that these departing members will form the new party without accepting government subsidies. Meanwhile, members originally from Komeito intend to return to their former party. 

While the formal alliance is dissolving, the various factions intend to maintain a unified parliamentary group in the House of Representatives to continue functioning as an opposition force. The split has reportedly caused confusion and frustration among local officials in Shiga Prefecture regarding the political impact of the union’s dissolution.
