In late August 2026, two workers were rescued in La Piedad, Michoacán, after losing consciousness inside a cistern while performing waterproofing and painting tasks. The intoxication was attributed to the accumulation of chemical vapors, such as thinner and other solvents, in a poorly ventilated space. Local residents assisted in the extraction by breaking part of the concrete structure, and both men were eventually reported to be out of danger.

By early September, a more fatal incident occurred in Morelia, Michoacán, where four construction workers died from asphyxiation in a cistern. The accident began when a worker lost consciousness due to a lack of oxygen; subsequent attempts by four colleagues to rescue him resulted in them also losing consciousness due to gas accumulation. During the emergency response, a municipal firefighter also fainted. While one worker and the firefighter were rescued, four workers were confirmed dead at the scene. The Fiscalía General del Estado de Michoacán has launched an investigation into the incident.
