Reports regarding clandestine graves in Mexico have highlighted significant discrepancies between different monitoring bodies. Data from the Plataforma Ciudadana de Fosas indicated that 651 graves were documented across 16 states in 2025, with Sonora, Chihuahua, Baja California Sur, and Jalisco recording the highest numbers. However, the Federal Attorney General’s Office (FGR) reported only 32 graves across six states, omitting several regions where state authorities and media had identified findings.

In Coahuila, the search collective Grupo Vida Laguna discovered 13 clandestine graves containing human remains in the Salitrillo Dunes near Viesca. Forensic identification efforts face challenges due to the calcination of remains, which may limit DNA testing availability.

Recent discoveries by search collectives continue to emerge in other regions. In Tecate, Baja California, the Unión y Fuerza por Nuestros Desaparecidos Tecate located skeletal remains believed to belong to three victims near the Cerro Azul area following an anonymous tip. This discovery follows a previous finding near Rancho Las Creaturas where a grave containing more than ten bodies was located.

In Uruapan, Michoacán, the collective ‘Madres buscadoras con una Luz en el corazón’ discovered a clandestine grave in an avocado orchard near Cutzato. The remains of a male were recovered alongside clothing and personal items, including handcuffs and a bracelet bearing the name ‘Ángel’. In both instances, state prosecutors and forensic services are processing the scenes for identification.

Investigations by Data Cívica, Artículo 19, and the Universidad Iberoamericana suggest the reporting gap between federal and local data may stem from integration issues and a lack of transparency in eleven states.
