Reports from Plan International indicate that the climate crisis disproportionately threatens the health, rights, and safety of women and girls globally. Research spanning three decades and involving surveys from 5,000 girls in countries such as Bangladesh, Kenya, Peru, Senegal, and Zimbabwe shows that climate-related disasters—including droughts, floods, and extreme heat—increase the risks of child marriage, unintended pregnancy, and violence.

Specific findings highlight that climate shocks disrupt essential services. One study noted that 36 percent of respondents observed an increase in child marriages within their communities due to climate disasters, while 76 percent of women and girls in a specific survey struggled to access reproductive or sexual health services. Additionally, 50 percent reported difficulties accessing clean water for hygiene or menstrual products. New data from Plan International indicates that one in 10 girls has personally experienced an unintended pregnancy following a climate event, and nine in 10 girls reported that climate phenomena place “severe pressure” on their family’s stability and survival. Furthermore, 28 percent of respondents noted an increase in violence against women and girls.

In Peru, the El Niño phenomenon is linked to high risks for an estimated 2.3 million children due to intense rains and flooding. The organization emphasizes that maintaining access to education is a vital protection against exploitation and that there is a significant funding gap, with only 0.5 percent of multilateral climate finance currently directed toward health services.
