Investigative research has highlighted the significant role of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) spending in college football, showing a strong correlation between high financial allocations and national rankings. Estimates indicate that top programs such as Ohio State, Oregon, and Texas maintain budgets ranging from approximately $45 million to $55 million. As the impact of these budgets becomes more apparent, debate has emerged among analysts and coaches regarding competitive success. While some programs like Nebraska maintain high spending levels, others face scrutiny; for instance, Penn State’s estimated roster spending of $29 million to $32 million has led to concerns about its aggressiveness in talent acquisition. Additionally, the relationship between funding and performance remains a point of contention. While high-spending rosters at programs like LSU and Miami have seen success, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney has argued that despite having a budget exceeding $25 million, on-field struggles are a matter of coaching and play rather than a lack of financial resources. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-14: College football programs face scrutiny over NIL-era roster spending College football programs face scrutiny over NIL-era spending, with Penn State questioned on its investment levels and Clemson's Dabo Swinney defending performance despite budget gaps. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/college-football-programs-face-scrutiny-over-nil-era-roster-spending ### 2026-09-16: The Athletic report estimates NIL spending for top college football programs A report by The Athletic estimates NIL spending for 68 college football programs, revealing Ohio State, Oregon, and Texas as the highest spenders, with a correlation to AP Top 25 rankings. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/the-athletic-report-estimates-nil-spending-for-top-college-football-programs --- Cite as: College football NIL spending trends.
