The Colombian labor market is facing structural challenges regarding professional competitiveness and purchasing power. Analyses indicate that while higher education is linked to higher earnings, the real value of wages for some professionals has declined when adjusted for inflation compared to 15 years ago. This trend is compounded by an increasing supply of talent, with over 2.3 million students currently enrolled in undergraduate programs.

In response to these economic conditions, negotiations for the 2027 minimum wage have commenced between the national government, employers, and labor representatives. Business associations have proposed increases between 8% and 9.5%, a significant departure from the 23.7% increase implemented for 2026. Discussions are expected to focus on inflation, labor productivity, GDP growth, and the cost of living.

Additionally, the Ministry of Labor has clarified that the 2026 minimum wage remains legally binding despite legal challenges in the Council of State, noting that workers are not required to return previously paid wages.
