# Colombian military operations against FARC dissidents

The Colombian military has intensified offensives in the Guaviare department targeting dissident factions of the former FARC. Recent operations, including ‘Operation Amón’ and ‘Operación Militar Azarías’, have targeted the Estado Mayor de Bloques y Frente (EMBF) and the Carolina Ramírez Front.

In the El Retorno area, an August 27 bombing targeting the Jorge Suárez Briceño Block, led by alias ‘Cotiz’, resulted in ten deaths, including three minors aged 15 and 16. This strike, named ‘Operación Amón’, was carried out using eleven aircraft from the Colombian Aerospace Force. Medicina Legal has identified nine of the ten victims, consisting of four women and five men, all members of the EMBF led by Calarcá Córdoba. 

Following this, ‘Operación Militar Azarías’ in Miraflores reported 20 deaths and five captures within the Carolina Ramírez structure, a faction under the command of Néstor Gregorio Vera, known as alias ‘Iván Mordisco’. Among the deceased was a high-ranking leader known as alias ‘El Tigre’ or ‘Pintado’. 

President Abelardo de la Espriella has faced intense criticism following the release of footage showing him walking among the bodies of deceased dissidents during ‘Operación Azarías’. Opposition leaders have condemned the imagery as a ‘dehumanizing political propaganda tactic.’

In response to the confirmed deaths of minors during these operations, a Bogotá family court issued a precautionary order mandating that the Presidency and the Military suspend offensive aerial operations in any area where there is verifiable information regarding the presence of recruited children or adolescents. 

On August 31, the President announced a decisive shift in national security policy by terminating peace dialogue tables with the EMBF, the CNEB, and the ACSN, characterizing previous negotiations as a ‘surrender of sovereignty to narcoterrorism.’
