In January, a licensed hunter in Colorado killed a female gray wolf, identified as tag 2504, after mistaking the animal for a coyote. The wolf was part of a group of 15 animals relocated from British Columbia to Colorado in early 2025 as part of a reintroduction program. 

Following a joint investigation by Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the hunter was cited for violating agency regulations but was not facing further criminal charges. CPW Chief of Law Enforcement Ty Petersburg noted the hunter was credited for the “ethical choice to immediately report the incident and take responsibility for the accident.”

By September, CPW officials defended the decision to issue a $139.50 fine and license suspension points rather than pursuing more severe penalties. While wildlife advocates argued the penalty was insufficient to protect the endangered species, Petersburg stated the agency aimed to “incentivize that behavior” of cooperation and remorse. Although the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service maintains authority to prosecute poaching with significant fines and jail time, the federal agency transferred the investigation to the state at the request of CPW to avoid lengthy federal processes.
