On October 19, 2026, Turkey observed Muhtars Day with widespread ceremonies and official commemorations across numerous provinces. These events honored the role of village and neighborhood heads as a vital bridge between the state and its citizens.

During the commemorations, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan addressed a gathering at the Presidential Complex, emphasizing the institution’s importance to national stability and local democracy. Amidst regional tensions, Erdoğan stated, “In a climate of chaos and crisis, we work day and night to ensure that not a hair on Turkey’s head is harmed.” He also noted improvements in muhtars’ social and financial rights, including significant increases in monthly payments and the implementation of the Muhtar Information System (MUBİS).

Following the official observances, municipal leaders held various meetings to strengthen local cooperation. In Manisa, Mayor Besim Dutlulu hosted a breakfast for female muhtars, emphasizing that they are “essential partners in local governance” rather than mere messengers. In Adana, Deputy Mayor Güngör Geçer conducted events across 15 districts, including Kozan, Çukurova, and Seyhan, where he honored long-serving muhtars with plaques for up to 50 years of service. Geçer noted that the municipality intends to collect formal requests from muhtars to inform upcoming budget discussions.

Other regional meetings included discussions in Bafra, Yunusemre, and Tekman regarding the muhtars’ roles in driving economic development and serving as “representatives of direct democracy.” In Çukurova, CHP District Chairman Hasan Aslan stressed that public service should transcend political affiliations.
