Religious tradition commemorates Saint Autonom (also known as Autonomos), an early Christian bishop who lived during the late 3rd and early 4th centuries. To avoid persecutions led by Emperor Diocletian, he reportedly traveled from Italy to the Soreoi region of Bithynia in Asia Minor.

While in Asia Minor, Autonom established Christian communities and built a temple dedicated to the Archangel Michael. His missionary efforts in regions such as Lycaonia and Isauria led to many conversions, which reportedly incited hostility from local idol worshippers.

Tradition states that Autonom was martyred in 313 AD when a group attacked his temple during a Divine Liturgy, killing him by stoning inside the sanctuary. Following his death, a temple was reportedly erected over his grave during the reign of Emperor Constantine. Later legends claim his incorrupt relics were rediscovered after he appeared in a soldier's dream, resulting in reported miracles and healings.
