Religious traditions within the Catholic and Orthodox Churches commemorate Saint Pelagia of Antioch, a figure noted for her radical conversion from a life of luxury and worldly pursuits to one of asceticism and service to the poor.

According to tradition, Pelagia underwent a spiritual transformation after hearing sermons regarding sin, divine mercy, and the Last Judgment. Specifically, accounts note that following a sermon by Bishop Non at the Church of Saint Julian, she experienced a profound spiritual awakening. After being sponsored for baptism by the deaconess Romana, she renounced her wealth to assist the impoverished and lived a life of rigorous prayer and fasting. She eventually traveled to Jerusalem, where she lived under the male name Pelagius on the Mount of Olives before her death around 461 AD.

In the Serbian Orthodox Church and among believers in regions such as Bosnia and Herzegovina, the feast day of Saint Pelagia is observed alongside Saint Thaïs, an Egyptian figure who also transitioned from worldly indulgence to monastic life following an encounter with the monk Paphnutius. Within the Orthodox calendar, this commemoration is observed as a fasting day, with other saints such as Saint Dositheus and Saint Tryphon of Vyatsk also being recognized.
