The Balkan region is observing the 19th anniversary of the death of Macedonian singer Toše Proeski, who passed away in a car accident near Nova Gradiška, Croatia, on October 16, 2007. Proeski, a prominent regional artist known as the ‘Macedonian Nightingale’ and a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, died at age 26 when his vehicle struck a truck while traveling toward Skopje.

Commemorative activities for this anniversary included an ultra-marathon featuring Macedonian athletes. In Kruševo, 14 runners completed a trek from Nova Gradiška to Proeski’s final resting place in Gumenje, where they honored his memory with music and the presentation of his vinyl album, ‘Igrali Bez granica’. 

In Nova Gradiška, the local Tourist Board organized events including the laying of wreaths and the lighting of candles at a monument near the Electrical-Technical and Economic School. The Macedonian Ambassador to Croatia, Dragan Gjurchevski, attended the gathering alongside local officials and fans. The Ambassador announced that multi-day events are being planned for next year to honor the 20th anniversary of the tragedy.

In terms of his professional legacy, the EMDC Network has officially taken over the administration of Proeski’s entire musical catalog on behalf of his family to preserve his work for future generations. His musical impact continues to be celebrated through retrospectives of his major hits, such as ‘Čija si’ and ‘Igra bez granica’. 

In Skopje, the Lazo Angeloski Primary School, supported by the Aerodrom Municipality, organized the ‘Tose, we all love you’ memorial event, which included a ‘Steps of Kindness’ walk and the opening of a horticultural park.
