Greece has held commemorations to mark the 195th anniversary of the assassination of Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first Governor of the modern Greek state.

In Thessaloniki, a ceremony was held at the junction of Egnatia and Chalkéon streets in Dikastirion Square to unveil a new 2.20-meter tall bronze relief bust by sculptor Georgios Kikoutis. Donated to the municipality by the Corfiot Union of Thessaloniki ‘Agios Spyridon’, the monument features a white marble base and contains sacred relics from Corfu within its chest, including icons and soil from Kapodistrias’ ancestral home. During the event, Mayor Stelios Angeloudis described Kapodistrias as a figure of “global stature and deep Greek consciousness” who worked to build the institutions of the modern Greek state. Metropolitan Philotheos of Thessaloniki also reflected on the historical divisions that led to the Governor's death.

In Nafplio, the site of the 1831 assassination, memorial services were conducted at the Church of Agios Spyridon. Historical records note that Kapodistrias, a former Russian Foreign Minister, was killed by Konstantinos and Georgios Mavromichalis amidst political conflicts over centralized power. His death is viewed by historians as a tragic turning point that delayed the country's modernization. Kapodistrias is credited with founding the National Bank and introducing the first modern currency while seeking to stabilize the fledgling nation's economy despite internal factionalism.
