In Jakarta, community groups are responding to government instructions regarding waste sorting at the source. Efforts include encouraging traditional markets to manage waste independently and converting plastic and styrofoam into alternative fuels. In some residential areas, processed plastic waste is used to power operational vehicles and machinery. In Yogyakarta, residents have adopted household-based organic waste management using black soldier fly larvae, or maggots. This method allows for processing kitchen waste at home to prevent odor in dense areas while providing income through the sale of maggots to livestock farmers. Additionally, waste sorting groups in the region are processing significant quantities of organic waste for use as fish feed, though demand from local fishing pond operators currently exceeds supply. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-27: Yogyakarta residents implement organic waste management through maggot cultivation Residents in Yogyakarta are managing organic waste through household-based maggot cultivation and sorting groups to provide feed for livestock and fish ponds. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/yogyakarta-residents-implement-organic-waste-management-through-maggot-cultivation ### 2026-10-19: Jakarta communities implement independent waste management and fuel production Jakarta residents and community groups are implementing independent waste management systems, converting organic market waste and plastic into economic value and alternative fuels. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/jakarta-communities-implement-independent-waste-management-and-fuel-production --- Cite as: Community-led waste management in Indonesia.
