Developments: 2. The Congolese government has initiated efforts to improve sanitation and hygiene through international partnerships and local mobilization. In late September, the Minister of Urban Sanitation, Local Development, and Road Maintenance, Juste Désiré Mondélé, met with UNICEF and the African Development Bank (AfDB) to discuss a ‘sanitation facility.’ This initiative, supported by the AfDB and involving technical expertise from UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO), aims to provide families with resources for home sanitation services. Plans were also discussed to integrate sanitation into the next National Development Plan to improve child health. Following these discussions, the Ministry launched a mobilization campaign in Brazzaville on October 3. This campaign focuses on improving sanitation in schools and rehabilitating latrines. The effort involves cleaning gutters, waste collection, and general maintenance of school grounds, conducted in coordination with the ministries of general and technical education and various non-governmental organizations. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-05: Brazzaville launches school sanitation and hygiene campaign Minister Juste Désiré Mondélé launched a sanitation campaign in Brazzaville to clean schools and rehabilitate latrines following the start of the new academic year. 7 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/brazzaville-launches-school-sanitation-and-hygiene-campaign ### 2026-09-28: Congo partners with UNICEF and AfDB on sanitation initiative Congo is partnering with UNICEF and the African Development Bank to launch a sanitation facility to help families access essential household sanitation services. 4 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/congo-partners-with-unicef-and-afdb-on-sanitation-initiative --- Cite as: Congo sanitation and hygiene initiatives.
