Initially, the minister received public support during a musical performance in Blumenau, where singer Luciano Camargo called for prayers for Mendonça. Camargo praised the minister’s courage in maintaining his religious and political convictions, describing him as “a man who is not afraid to put what he believes, what he believes, [forward].” Following this, a group of religious leaders issued an interpellation questioning the ethical and constitutional implications of Mendonça’s active pastoral role at the Presbyterian Church of Pinheiros while serving on the nation’s highest court. These leaders cited the Westminster Confession of Faith to argue for a distinction between civil magistracy and religious administration, expressing concerns over judicial impartiality and the separation of church and state. Concurrently, Pastor Hernandes Dias Lopes, a leader at the same church, utilized social media to criticize the national political landscape, alleging that corruption and “hidden forces” are eroding moral values and twisting the law. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-17: Religious leaders question André Mendonça's dual roles Brazilian religious leaders are questioning Supreme Court Minister André Mendonça’s dual role as a judge and Presbyterian pastor, citing concerns over impartiality and the separation of church and state. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/religious-leaders-question-andr-mendonas-dual-roles ### 2026-09-04: Luciano Camargo calls for prayers for André Mendonça during show Singer Luciano Camargo called for prayers for STF Minister André Mendonça during a Zezé Di Camargo & Luciano concert in Blumenau, citing their shared religious connection. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/luciano-camargo-calls-for-prayers-for-andr-mendona-during-show --- Cite as: Controversy over André Mendonça’s religious and judicial-duo.
