Sources: 4. Developments: 2. In late September 2026, authorities in Sarawak began investigating a series of attacks on 24-hour convenience stores across Kuching, Sri Aman, and Bintulu. These incidents involved arson, vandalism, and the use of suspected incendiary or explosive objects. Local officials expressed concern that some attacks occurred while people were still inside the premises and called for investigations to determine if the violence was part of an organized operation. By September 30, Sarawak Police reported that they had detained three suspects and identified approximately 10 others in connection with the arson attacks. Police Commissioner Datuk Mohamad Zainal Abdullah stated that investigations suggest the incidents were driven by business rivalries, noting that many of the targeted stores were involved in selling top-up services for online gambling. Authorities indicated that some suspects may have fled the country. The investigation has led to calls for local authorities to crack down on premises misusing business licenses and for the revision of gambling laws to better address modern technological developments. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-30: Sarawak police investigate convenience store arson in Kuching Three suspects are detained and 10 others identified following arson attacks on convenience stores in Kuching and Sri Aman, allegedly linked to business rivalries and online gambling activities. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/sarawak-police-investigate-convenience-store-arson-in-kuching ### 2026-09-23: Sarawak authorities conduct immigration arrests and investigate store attacks Sarawak authorities arrested 84 foreign nationals in a Bintulu immigration raid, while officials call for a probe into coordinated arson and vandalism attacks on convenience stores. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/sarawak-authorities-conduct-immigration-arrests-and-investigate-store-attacks --- Cite as: Convenience store arson attacks in Sarawak.
