Developments: 2. The COP17 Biodiversity Summit in Yerevan, Armenia, began with calls from Greenpeace for increased international cooperation to protect vulnerable ecosystems. The organization advocated for meeting the UN treaty goal of protecting 30 percent of the oceans by 2030, noting that current protection levels are insufficient for migratory species. By the conclusion of the summit, significant concerns emerged regarding the global capacity to meet 2030 nature protection targets. Ecologistas en Acción criticized the event as a missed opportunity, alleging that Russia, with reported support from Saudi Arabia and Argentina, blocked key agreements. The group stated that geopolitical tensions hindered progress on financing and the integration of biodiversity into economic policies. WWF International highlighted a critical implementation gap in ocean conservation, noting that while terrestrial areas are projected to reach 27 percent protection by 2030, ocean protection is expected to reach only 12 percent. Despite these setbacks, the summit successfully approved operating rules for a new body dedicated to indigenous peoples and local communities. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-31: COP17 Biodiversity Summit concludes with warnings over implementation gaps The COP17 Biodiversity Summit ended with warnings from Ecologistas en Acción and WWF regarding geopolitical obstacles and a failure to meet 2030 targets, especially for ocean protection. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/cop17-biodiversity-summit-concludes-with-warnings-over-implementation-gaps ### 2026-10-18: Greenpeace calls for urgent ocean protection at UN biodiversity summit Greenpeace urges nations to accelerate ocean protection efforts at a UN biodiversity summit, aiming to meet the goal of protecting 30 percent of international waters by 2030. 5 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/greenpeace-calls-for-urgent-ocean-protection-at-un-biodiversity-summit --- Cite as: COP17 Biodiversity Summit in Armenia.
