Initially, the Board of Impulsa Mendoza approved a public tender awarding Cerro Quebrado, a BHP subsidiary, an exploration contract with an option to purchase for the El Seguro copper project. This project encompasses the El Yeso, Fausto, and Gitana properties in southern Mendoza as part of the Malargüe Western Mining District I. Following this, BHP Metals Exploration and Kobrea Exploration announced a US$4 million investment for the 2026-2027 exploration season within the Western Malargüe Copper Projects. This funding targets the El Destino prospect, a 9,487-hectare site containing a copper-gold-molybdenum porphyry system. Planned activities include diamond drilling, geological mapping, and rock chip sampling. This initiative is part of a broader cooperation agreement where BHP funds exploration across seven of Kobrea’s regional projects located within the Neogene Porphyry Belt. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-30: Kobrea and BHP invest US$4 million in Argentina copper exploration Kobrea Exploration and BHP are investing US$4 million in copper exploration projects in Mendoza, Argentina, focusing on drilling and geological studies at the El Destino prospect for the 2026-2027 season. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/kobrea-and-bhp-invest-us4-million-in-argentina-copper-exploration ### 2026-09-28: BHP subsidiary awarded El Seguro copper project in Mendoza BHP subsidiary Cerro Quebrado has been awarded the rights to explore the El Seguro copper project in Mendoza, Argentina, through a contract with an option to purchase. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/bhp-subsidiary-awarded-el-seguro-copper-project-in-mendoza --- Cite as: Copper exploration in Mendoza, Argentina.
