Researchers in the Florida Keys are testing underwater shading methods to protect Caribbean coral reefs from heat-induced bleaching. Using structures described as “underwater umbrellas” or parasols made from PVC pipe and nylon fabric, scientists have successfully reduced ultraviolet and irradiance exposure by approximately 60%.

Studies conducted on brain coral species, such as Pseudodiploria clivosa and Colpophyllia natans, indicate that these shades mitigate damage and can help some corals recover color. While the method does not lower water temperatures, it serves as a proof of concept for protecting targeted colonies during extreme heat events.

Beyond physical shading, the survival of these reefs is linked to the coral microbiome—a complex community of symbiotic algae, bacteria, and other microorganisms essential for nutrient recycling and environmental stress resistance. When heat stress causes corals to expel these algae, they undergo bleaching, leaving them vulnerable to death.

Recent efforts by scientists from Nova Southeastern University have specifically targeted species like Boulder brain coral and knobby brain coral, which were heavily impacted by record-breaking heat waves in 2023 and 2024. Complementary research from the University of Georgia suggests that heat stress is further exacerbated by preexisting diseases and poor water quality. This research indicates that improving local water quality and focusing restoration on specific reef topographies, which may function as “thermal oases,” are critical strategies for increasing survival rates in warming oceans.
