Ugandan authorities have pursued several high-profile corruption cases involving the misappropriation of public funds and bribery.

In September 2026, the Anti-Corruption Court in Kampala granted bail to former Parliament Director of Communications Chris Obore and six others. The group is accused of embezzling, laundering money, and causing financial loss totaling approximately Shs26.8 billion. Prosecutors allege these funds, intended for stakeholder engagements and corporate social responsibility, were mishandled between 2023 and May 2026.

By early October 2026, legal actions expanded to local government officials. In Bugweri District, Human Resource Officer Wilson Byekwaso was convicted for creating “ghost employees” on the government payroll to embezzle Shs125.37 million. Byekwaso pleaded guilty to enrolling three individuals who were never employed at Busembatia Secondary School; the court ordered him to refund the amount and barred him from public office for 10 years. Additionally, former Mukono District Speaker Betty Hope Nakasi was remanded to prison following allegations of soliciting a Shs2 million bribe to influence a promotion within the Mukono District Service Commission.

Further investigations have led to the arrest of several other officials. Nathan Negesa of the Office of the President and Moses Bekabye, a technical advisor at the Ministry of Finance, were detained following a Parliamentary Committee inquiry into the pricing of digital number plates. Separately, the Ugandan Consul General in Mombasa, Herbert Kiguli, was remanded to Luzira Prison. The Inspectorate of Government charged Kiguli with abuse of office and causing a financial loss of approximately UGX 494 million related to unbudgeted requisitions signed during his tenure at the Ministry of Agriculture in 2020.
