The Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) has addressed concerns regarding the National Electric System (SEN) in Costa Rica. While the Institute stated there is no immediate risk of shortages and capacity is sufficient through 2026, it warned that current infrastructure is inadequate for long-term growth projections.

ICE characterized the assumption that current capacity can meet future decades of demand as a “fundamental technical error.” The Institute noted that billions of dollars in investment are required to ensure sustainability and argued it would be “irresponsible to centralize” such massive costs solely within the Institute. Additionally, the organization highlighted the need to optimize infrastructure in the Southern Zone to better connect production and consumption centers.
