Sources: 18. Developments: 2. Costa Rican President Laura Fernández has faced diplomatic scrutiny and domestic political rumors regarding her administration’s international relations. Initial criticism emerged following the dismissal of former Foreign Minister Manuel Tovar and the President’s public apologies to the United States Ambassador after missing a meeting convened by Donald Trump. Panamanian media commentators described the diplomatic situation as “vergonzoso” (shameful). Following these tensions, rumors circulated on social media suggesting that the United States was revoking visas for Costa Rican officials, including Minister of Finance and Presidency Rodrigo Chaves Robles. President Fernández attributed these claims to “political enemies” and noted that the U.S. Embassy provided a clarification that was “very, very important,” though the embassy’s official statement addressed the misinformation without explicitly confirming that no members of the government were being questioned. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-30: United States implements new visa screening and travel warnings The U.S. has expanded social media screening for TN, TD, and I visas, issued a travel ban for Norte de Santander, Colombia, and warned against maternity tourism in the Dominican Republic. 14 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/laura-fernndez-denies-rumors-of-us-visa-revocations-for-costa-rican-officials ### 2026-09-28: Laura Fernández inaugurates Quepos bridge and faces diplomatic criticism Costa Rican President Laura Fernández inaugurated a new bridge in Quepos and announced an aerodrome project, while facing international criticism over the dismissal of her Foreign Minister. 4 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/laura-fernndez-inaugurates-quepos-bridge-and-faces-diplomatic-criticism --- Cite as: Costa Rican diplomatic and political tensions.
