Sofía Escalante Gutiérrez, a 10-year-old girl from Costa Rica, has successfully overcome acute myeloid leukemia (AML) following a bone marrow transplant donated by her mother, Angélica Gutiérrez.

After being diagnosed in 2014, Sofía underwent nine months of chemotherapy. Although initial results were positive, the leukemia returned while the family was traveling abroad. Doctors determined that a bone marrow transplant was the only remaining option. Angélica Gutiérrez was identified as a compatible donor with a 50% match.

The procedure was performed at the San Juan de Dios Hospital by a specialist recently returned from training in Japan. This case coincides with World Bone Marrow Donor Day, highlighting the importance of donation. Between 2015 and 2026, the Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social (CCSS) has recorded 931 bone marrow transplants performed across the México, San Juan de Dios, and National Children's hospitals.
