Sources: 2. Developments: 2. Police statistics in Western Australia indicate significant crime disparities between metropolitan areas and regional zones. In the Kimberley region, data shows that one in three people are victims of crime, with residents being nearly ten times more likely to experience assault, sexual attack, or threats compared to those in metropolitan Perth. Personal violent crimes, including assaults, kidnappings, and sexual offenses, have risen significantly in the northern region over the last financial year. This follows a crisis declaration in January 2022, which prompted the state government to deploy police reinforcements and allocate funding to address juvenile crime. Recent initiatives include the opening of the Wala Kooral-bi Centre near Derby, a therapeutic residential diversion program for Indigenous boys aged 14 to 17. Additionally, funding has been directed toward the Preventing FASD Project to support public education and prevention. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-12: Kimberley region driving safety guide for Western Australia A guide for safely driving in Western Australia's Kimberley region highlights risks like low visibility, dust, and roaming animals such as donkeys and cattle. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/kimberley-region-driving-safety-guide-for-western-australia ### 2026-08-13: Kimberley region faces high crime rates in Western Australia Western Australia Police data shows high crime rates in the Kimberley, where one in three people are victims of crime, highlighting a major disparity between regional and metropolitan areas. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/kimberley-region-faces-high-crime-rates-in-western-australia --- Cite as: Crime rates in Western Australia Kimberley region.
