Sources: 9. Developments: 2. The French livestock and beef processing sectors are facing significant operational and financial pressures. Early reports highlighted the impact of severe drought and heatwaves on farmers, specifically in Ille-et-Vilaine, where a lack of grazing land and a 40% reduction in forage forced the slaughter of healthy cattle to manage depleted food stocks. This localized agricultural strain has expanded into a broader industry crisis. The federation Culture Viande has warned of a critical financial squeeze in the beef processing sector, noting that profit margins have reached their lowest levels since 2017. This is driven by a structural imbalance where cattle purchase costs rose by 22% in 2025, while sales prices only increased by 14%, alongside rising energy, water, and packaging costs. As beef consumption declined by approximately 3% in 2025, industry leaders have raised concerns regarding food sovereignty. President Yves Fantou warned that the decline in domestic herds is increasing reliance on imports, which currently account for 26% of beef consumption, 29% of pork, and 62% of sheep meat. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-29: Culture Viande warns of crisis in French beef processing sector French meat processors face a profit margin crisis as rising cattle purchase costs and energy prices clash with declining beef demand and increasing reliance on meat imports. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/culture-viande-warns-of-crisis-in-french-beef-processing-sector ### 2026-09-05: France livestock: Drought forces cattle slaughter and welfare seizure Drought in Ille-et-Vilaine has forced French farmers to slaughter healthy cattle due to forage shortages, while a separate animal welfare seizure in Orne resulted in an injury to a veterinary agent. 7 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/france-livestock-drought-forces-cattle-slaughter-and-welfare-seizure --- Cite as: Crisis in French livestock and beef sectors.
