Initial criticism focused on how news outlets characterize his influence, noting a divide between those labeling him an influential far-right podcaster and those, such as NPR, designating him a ‘Newsmaker’. Observers also criticized his coverage of the October 7 attacks and his decision to provide platforms to controversial figures, which led to him being named ‘Antisemite of the Year’ by StopAntisemitism. Subsequent scrutiny expanded to include rebukes from both media watchdogs and conservative commentators. Media Matters reported that Carlson suggested white people face extinction, a claim critics argued was being sanitized in mainstream interviews. Within the conservative movement, figures such as Ben Shapiro criticized his rhetoric regarding Jewish people, while Dave Rubin labeled him a ‘national socialist’ and a ‘propagandist’.
