Cuba has initiated a series of territorial and strategic defense exercises to mark National Defense Day. The drills are designed to strengthen the combat readiness of leadership organs, military troops, and the civilian population against potential aggression or exceptional situations. Initial exercises took place in the Monjará Defense Zone within Granma province, focusing on protecting the population from limited enemy airstrikes. These activities involved high-ranking officials, including Vice President Salvador Valdés and Prime Minister Manuel Marrero, who emphasized the need for discipline within Production and Defense Brigades. The scope of the exercises expanded to a nationwide level, including inspections in Havana. President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez visited the Colón-Nuevo Vedado Defense Zone to review command cohesion, while other officials inspected the Camilo Cienfuegos Defense Zone. Throughout these drills, the government has integrated military preparedness with civilian priorities, such as urban agriculture, renewable energy transition, and the stability of the National Electric System, to ensure social and economic security during emergencies. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-09: Cuba conducts nationwide strategic exercises for National Defense Day Cuba is holding nationwide strategic exercises for National Defense Day, with high-ranking officials inspecting defense zones in Havana to ensure military readiness and civil protection. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/cuba-conducts-nationwide-strategic-exercises-for-national-defense-day ### 2026-10-02: Cuba conducts territorial defense exercises in Granma Cuba conducted territorial defense and civil protection exercises in Granma province, focusing on population safety during airstrikes and improving essential services like electricity and water. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/cuba-conducts-territorial-defense-exercises-in-granma --- Cite as: Cuba national defense exercises.
