Brazilian musician Gilberto Gil is the subject of various cultural performances and biographical works in Brazil and Portugal.

In Lisbon, the 84-year-old artist is scheduled to perform the opera-song ‘Amor Azul’ at the Coliseu dos Recreios on 10 October. This collaboration with Italian maestro Aldo Brizzi, inspired by the Indian epic Gita Govinda, is intended to serve as a “cultural bridge” between Brazil and Portugal.

In Brazil, the musical ‘Gil – Andar com Fé’, directed by Miguel Falabella and written by Newton Moreno, premiered on 20 August at Teatro Santander in São Paulo and is scheduled to run until 4 October. The production explores over six decades of Gil’s career, utilizing a Yoruba concept of time to connect his past, present, and future. The narrative highlights his role in the Tropicália movement, his period of exile in London during the military dictatorship, and his 1977 trip to Lagos, Nigeria, to connect with Fela Kuti. The show features 34 to 48 artists and includes iconic songs such as “Andar com Fé” and “Aquele Abraço”. Actor Gui Ventura, selected from approximately 800 candidates, stars as Gil, noting the “significant responsibility” of portraying the artist’s gestures and vocal resonance.

In Salvador, the musical ‘Domingo no Parque’ is holding a short run at Teatro Faresi. Directed by Alexandre Reinecke with musical direction by Bem Gil, the show is inspired by Gil’s Tropicália classic, incorporating elements of capoeira and resistance against the military dictatorship.

Additionally, biographer Tom Cardoso has released a new book, “Nem Tanto Esotérico Assim,” which explores Gil’s history and reveals that while Gil was in exile, his father, Gil Moreira, supported the 1964 coup.
