The Supreme Federal Court (STF) has reinstated evidence regarding an investigation into patient deaths at the Hospital Evangélico de Curitiba. Minister Alexandre de Moraes overturned a 2025 ruling by the Superior Tribunal de Justiça (STJ) that had previously annulled certain evidence.

The reinstated materials consist of 670 medical records from the hospital’s General Intensive Care Unit (ICU) covering the period between January 2006 and February 2013. These records were originally obtained via search and seizure warrants by the Public Ministry of Paraná (MPPR).

Investigators are examining allegations that medical professionals, including former ICU head Dr. Virgínia Helena Soares de Souza, administered medications without therapeutic justification. Such actions are alleged to have contributed to the deaths of at least 101 people. The investigation involves charges of qualified homicide and criminal conspiracy. This ruling allows criminal actions and police inquiries that were previously suspended to proceed.
