Cybercriminals in India are employing various impersonation tactics to defraud citizens through sophisticated social engineering. Initial reports highlight a “digital arrest” tactic where scammers pose as law enforcement or banking officials. In these instances, victims—often elderly—are told they are under investigation for crimes such as illegal transactions or terrorist activities. Victims are pressured to remain isolated and transfer large sums of money to accounts for “verification.” Notable cases include a former judge in Jaipur losing Rs 2.5 crore and a retired professor in Maharashtra losing Rs 1 crore. Recent escalations show a significant focus on targeting retirees and high-net-worth individuals. In Hyderabad, a 75-year-old retired government employee lost approximately ₹96 lakh via fake job offers and fraudulent Telegram trading platforms. In Coimbatore, a 67-year-old retired doctor lost ₹98 lakh to a “digital arrest” scheme. More recently, a 75-year-old industrialist in Coimbatore was defrauded of Rs 5.5 crore after scammers posing as Mumbai police officers claimed his accounts were linked to terrorist funding. In Bengaluru, a 50-year-old surgeon lost Rs 4.47 crore to a cryptocurrency investment scam involving fake trading platforms.

In response, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has launched ‘Operation Chakra-6’ following Supreme Court directives. This crackdown targets organized networks involved in massive fraud cases, including losses in BITS Pilani, Gujarat, and Karnataka. As part of this ongoing operation, the CBI has arrested five additional suspects, bringing the total number of arrests to eight, following coordinated raids at 89 locations across 20 states.
