Authorities and researchers have identified significant cybersecurity threats stemming from unauthorized sports and movie streaming platforms. Interpol has warned that pirate websites used for major events, such as the UEFA Champions League, utilize invasive advertising and fake links to distribute malware capable of infecting smartphones, computers, and smart TVs.

These infections can damage hardware, alter system settings, or steal personal information and passwords. Further research presented at the Ekoparty 22 conference in Buenos Aires highlighted specific risks associated with certain TV boxes used for free streaming. Researchers demonstrated that some devices contain pre-installed malicious software connected to command and control servers, allowing attackers to exploit home networks and access sensitive data like credit card information. Notably, the researchers found that performing a factory reset was ineffective at removing the malicious code.
