In August 2026, the Municipality of Paphos initiated a four-month marine pollution prevention program. Funded by the Cyprus Ports Authority and the municipalities of Paphos and Jerichopia, the program utilizes a specialized contractor to conduct daily maritime patrols to monitor petroleum products, solid waste, and sewage.

Following citizen complaints regarding debris, odors, and foam along the Limassol coastline, Cypriot officials have moved toward broader enhanced controls. A high-level meeting led by Deputy Minister of Shipping Marina Hatzimanoli, including representatives from the Department of Environment, the Cyprus Ports Authority, and the Limassol and Amathus municipalities, focused on coordinating a response to these issues.

Investigations are currently centered on the Moni Wastewater Treatment Plant, following reports of a malfunction that allegedly resulted in the discharge of hundreds of cubic meters of untreated water into the sea. While the Deputy Minister maintained that Cyprus’s waters remain clean, she acknowledged the necessity for improved inter-agency coordination.

To prevent future incidents, officials have proposed using drones and improved inspection vessel equipment to increase operational readiness. Furthermore, the Council of Ministers has decided to establish a Coast Guard to assist with maritime inspections and ensure more effective oversight before the next summer season.
